Front Head Cracks: Can They Be Repaired by Welding?

26 November 2025

The Front Head, the lowest part of the hydraulic breaker, carries the tool and bushings and acts as armor against all site impacts. Unfortunately, it is also the part that cracks most frequently.

Front head cracks are 99% caused by Operator Error. So why does this expensive part crack?

1. Number One Cause: Prying

If the operator pulls the boom (leverage) like digging with a bucket while the tool is inside the rock, the tool acts like a crowbar. This immense force bursts the Front Head from the inside out.

  • Result: Hairline cracks appear on the front head, and soon the block splits open completely.

2. Can It Be Repaired by Welding?

Customers often ask this to save costs. Our answer is clear:

Process Result HKM Advice
Surface Welding Temporary Fix Only external abrasions (armor) can be filled.
Deep Crack Welding RISKY Steel structure is compromised. It will crack again next to the weld. Not recommended.
Complete Replacement Permanent Solution If the crack reaches the internal structure, the head must be replaced.
