Is Piston Repair Possible? Risks of Chrome Plating & Grinding
26 November 2025
When an expensive part like a piston gets damaged, customers rightly ask, "Can it be repaired?" Piston repair is technically possible but not always economical or safe for every type of damage.
Especially in high-performance breakers like Atlas Copco or Rammer, incorrect piston repair can destroy the cylinder, tripling the cost.
1. Which Processes are Risky?
- Chrome Plating: Plating to increase piston diameter is a temporary solution. The plating peels off over time, and these hard flakes scratch the cylinder.
- Welding: Pistons are hardened with special heat treatment. Welding destroys the steel structure, and the piston will break at the weld point under stress.
2. Safe Repair Methods
Only superficial damage can be treated with:
- Polishing: Very fine scratches that cannot be felt with a fingernail can be removed with special polishing pads.
- Tip Correction: If only the piston tip is mushroomed, it can be slightly machined (within tolerance limits).
3. Compatible Brands
Instead of risking repair, check our stock for aftermarket pistons in original dimensions:
- Furukawa: F 35, F 45, FX series.
- Soosan: SB 81, SB 121.
- Montabert: V 1200, SC 36.
- Others: MSB, Daemo, Toku, MTB.
