Global Mining Report: Cost Analysis in Hard Rock

Global Mining Report: Cost Analysis in Hard Rock

26 November 2025

The trend in the mining world is changing. Difficulty in obtaining blasting permits and environmental pressures are pushing mines towards Mechanical Excavation methods.

1. Blasting vs. Mechanical Excavation

Blasting is fast but dangerous and lacks continuity (work stops during blasting). Mechanical excavation with Hydraulic Breakers and Drum Cutters allows for 24/7 uninterrupted production.

2. Cost Analysis

Although blasting seems cheaper initially; when safety measures, downtimes, and sizing (crushing-screening) costs are added, Mechanical Excavation is more economical in the long run. Also, the output material (especially with Drum Cutters) is of the desired size.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can a breaker replace blasting?
A: In very hard and massive rocks, blasting is still the fastest method. However, in medium-hard or fractured structures, giant breakers (4-5 tons) mounted on 50+ ton excavators are as efficient as blasting.

Q: Is a drum cutter used in mining?
A: Yes, especially in soft mines (coal, salt, gypsum), it is used as a Surface Miner and produces much cleaner product than blasting.
