Dampers and Buffers: Keeping Vibration Away from the Housing

Dampers and Buffers: Keeping Vibration Away from the Housing

26 November 2025

A hydraulic breaker generates tons of impact force while working. If this vibration is transmitted directly to the excavator boom, the machine's pins and boom will crack. This is where Dampers (Buffers) come into play.

Polyurethane buffers act as a "cushion" between the breaker body and the outer housing, absorbing vibration.

1. Types of Buffers

HKM manufactures polyurethane buffers with high elasticity and tear resistance:

  • Top Buffer: Located at the top of the breaker. Absorbs upward impact and recoil.
  • Side & Bottom Buffers: Restrict the body's movement sideways and downwards, preventing metal-on-metal collision.

2. When to Replace?

Buffers get crushed and lose their elasticity over time.

  • If Loose: If the breaker is "dancing" inside the housing, the buffers are done.
  • If Cracked: If deep cuts appear on the polyurethane, they must be replaced.

3. Compatible Brands

Some buffer models available in our stock:

  • Furukawa (FRD): F 19, F 22, F 35, F 45 (Top & Side Buffers).
  • Soosan: SB 81, SB 121 (Top & Bottom Dampers).
  • Atlas Copco: SB series elastic pads, heavy-duty buffers for HB 2000 and up.
  • Others: Daemo, MSB, Toku, D&A, MTB.
