Safety in Urban Demolition: Shear vs. Breaker?

Safety in Urban Demolition: Shear vs. Breaker?

26 November 2025

The era of "Smash and Break" in urban regeneration projects is ending. Noise and dust regulations are forcing contractors to use smarter and quieter equipment.

1. Concrete Cutter (Shear) Advantage

Demolishing a building with a breaker causes uncontrolled debris. Concrete Cutters however:

  • Are Silent: No impact noise, only the sound of hydraulic compression.
  • Cut Through: They slice through reinforced concrete columns like scissors, safely dismantling the building floor by floor.

2. Separation with Pulverizers

Extracting rebar from the rubble on the ground is the biggest source of revenue. Pulverizers crush the concrete into dust, leaving the steel clean.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can a concrete cutter be mounted on any excavator?
A: Cutters (Shears) are heavier than breakers and require additional hydraulic lines (rotation line). Selection must match your machine's tonnage and boom structure (High Reach).

Q: Does the pulverizer cut rebar?
A: The pulverizer's main job is crushing concrete, but it can cut thin rebar with the blades at the back of the jaw. For thick steel beams, a Scrap Shear should be used.
